The Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, designed by legendary architect, Frank Gehry, provided a striking, symphonic backdrop for the recent women’s march.  The various architectural shapes seemed to emulate the people, the motion, and all the animated conversations.

Always an inspiration.

Architect Michael Rachlin of Rachlin Partners and Wendy Williams of Snaidero USA celebrated together at the 2017 Celebrate Gala at the A + D Museum.  The museum never looked more artful, with its hand -stenciled murals throughout the room and architectural sculptures on view by notables such as architect Doris Kim Sung.  Many of Southern California’s leading architects were in attendance, including Board members from SCI-Arc and the A + D Museum.  The auction featured dozens of hand-drawn/painted framed postcards by leading architects such as Steven Ehrlich, Mehrdad Yazdani, Kulapat Yantrasast and Lorcan O’Herlihy.  A + D’s new downtown location is right in the center of the arts district, and this new space is a large, generous venue for noteworthy exhibitions and endless creativity.  We spent time visiting with the new A + D president, Dora Epstein Jones, who now has the position formerly occupied by Tibbie Dunbar.  Looking forward to many special exhibitions in the months to come.

Mike Grosswendt of All Coast Construction attended the opening night gala of the A + D Museum. Mike has been a construction sponsor of the museum in the past, for special exhibitions such as “Unbuilt L.A.”

Art collector Chara Schreyer and Designer Gary Hutton talked about their spectacular new book, Art House, at the Los Angeles Art Fair.  The book is a compilation of Schreyer’s highly respected contemporary art collection at her various homes in California, curated and designed by Gary Hutton.  Her latest home, a contemporary masterpiece by architect Joe McRitchie, was built by All Coast Construction, and features hundreds of fine pieces from her collection.  No empty seats for this inspirational talk.  Art House is dedicated to Schreyer’s father, a holocaust survivor, who just turned 99, and attended the talk.

Pancho Luna’s compelling acrylic installation, revealing ghost-like images of books, was on view at Timothy Yarger’s booth.

The Los Angeles Art Fair also featured artist Tigran Tsitoghdzyah’s piece, Mirror II, 2012, a provocative mixed media piece where multiple attributes of a woman’s visage is seen through a pair of hands, attempting to cloak her physical identity.

Artist Koh Sang Woo’s haunting new piece, Ether, was on exhibit at the LA Art Fair, presented by NW Asian Art Works.

Communication Arts + Design recently attended the A + D Museum VIP Reception hosted by Bulthaup.  It was a wonderful evening filled with delicious food and lively conversation.  We also got a first look at the fabulous auction items before the annual gala.  It was great mingling with the Board of the A + D, as well as some of the SCI-Arc Board members.  Snyder Diamond was one of the sponsors of the evening.

Communication Arts + Design attended the Distinguished Architects Lecture Series held at LACMA where we heard the lauded Odile Decq, the noted French architect and landscape designer, discuss her latest projects from all over the world.  The series is produced by Francesca Garcia Marques, and is sponsored in part by Bulthaup.

Communication Arts + Design frequented the KAA Design Art Exhibit & Sale.  We enjoyed a wonderful evening filled with friends, food, and artistic expression including paintings, photography, jewelry, and culinary delights.  The event was presented in partnership with artworxLA, with proceeds benefiting the organization, which works to combat Los Angeles’ high school dropout crisis through arts education.

Shane Mahan and I visited with Mary Kate Spach of Tim Barber LTD at Kings Road Café last week.  In addition to business development for Tim Barber LTD, Mary Kate heads up the new House and Home business—a company featuring architecturally inspiring homes of various genres, pre-designed inside and out.  This is a novel approach to a beautifully designed ‘ready to wear’ home that can still be personalized to each buyer.

We visited with Shane Mahan of Kitchell Custom Homes in Santa Barbara to tour the spectacular homes his firm built on the pristine Gaviota Coast.  Panoramic ocean views are abundant from each home.  The level of craftsmanship truly impressed, as did the fine interiors by Mark Weaver.
